A 30-year-old woman with increasing hypertension and proteinuria

Article Abstract:

A 30-year-old pregnant woman was admitted to a hospital with high blood pressure and protein in her urine. These are signs of preeclampsia, a serious complication of pregnancy. Protein in the urine is a specific sign of kidney damage. However, she had a history of systemic lupus erythematosus, which can also damage the kidney. Her physicians believed her kidney symptoms were not related to the preeclampsia. But a kidney biopsy revealed no sign of lupus nephritis, the term for kidney disease caused by lupus. Thus, her symptoms appeared to be related to preeclampsia. She was delivered via a cesarean section.

The nephrotic syndrome

Article Abstract:

The nephrotic syndrome is kidney disease characterized by significantly elevated protein excretion in the urine that, untreated, can lead to kidney failure. Diabetes, kidney inflammation, and other diseases can cause this syndrome. Patients may develop widespread swelling with fluid and retention of sodium in the blood, and half will form blood clots in the kidneys, legs, or lungs. Diuretic medications to reduce sodium and fluid levels, anticoagulant therapy to prevent excessive clotting, and antiinflammatory medications are primary therapies for nephrotic syndrome.
