A 50-year-old woman with increasing headache and a left abducent-nerve palsy

Article Abstract:

A subdural hygroma is a fluid-filled sac below a membrane covering the brain, and can result from disruption of the membranes from injury, surgery or other causes. A woman entered the hospital complaining of persistent headaches and paralysis of a nerve leading to the eye, causing blurred and double vision. Magnetic-resonance imaging revealed thickening of brain membranes and the collection of fluid in the skull. Physicians diagnosed a cerebrospinal fluid leak and opened the skull to evacuate it, which provided the patient some relief from headaches.

Viruses and Multiple Sclerosis

Article Abstract:

Multiple sclerosis may be caused by an immune response to a virus. A study published in 2001 showed that women who developed multiple sclerosis had antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus in their blood. This virus causes mononucleosis. Since other viruses can affect the nervous system, multiple sclerosis may be a viral disease.
