A 75-year-old man with multiple cranial-nerve defects and weakness and pain in the extremities

Article Abstract:

A 76-year-old man died of neurolymphomatosis. This disease is characterized by the infiltration of cranial and peripheral nerves by white blood cells called lymphocytes. At the age of 74, he developed a rash on his scalp following an insect bite, but diagnostic tests for Lyme disease were negative. He began to experience deafness, vision disorders and footdrop. At 76, he started behaving inappropriately and experienced confusion and delusions, facial paralysis and weakness in his right leg. A brain biopsy revealed lymphocyte infiltrates, indicating that he had lymphoma. But treatment with plasma exchange and methotrexate failed to resolve his nerve disorders. He died of respiratory failure. At autopsy, certain sections of his brain were found to contain lymphocyte infiltrates.

Heading down the wrong path

Article Abstract:

A case study of a 52-year-old woman is described who was presented with a stuttering course of discrete and multifocal neurologic deficits, including bilateral sensory symptoms of the arms, alexia, dysarthia and impaired peripheral vision consistent with the central nervous system involvement. She was diagnosed with intravascular lymphomatosis and it is suggested that such a disease should be considered in patients presenting with features of inflammatory vasculitis with a deteriorating condition.
