A 71-year-old woman with fever, hypotension, and changing cardiac findings

Her medical history over the previous 19 years included a heart attack, high blood pressure, kidney disorders including removal or the left kidney, and she had been characterized as chronically paranoid schizophrenic. She had been admitted several times in the previous 12 weeks. In the hospital she had fever and a high white cell count. The final diagnosis was acute Staphylococcus aureus infection in and around the heart affecting the mitral and aortal valves.

Article Abstract:

An 11-year-old girl was admitted to a hospital with fever, low blood pressure and excessive amounts of nitrogen in her blood. She had a rash on her abdomen, arms and legs and evidence of streptococcal infection. Doppler ultrasound revealed abnormal heart contraction. She developed respiratory failure and was placed on a ventilator. She slowly improved. Her physicians suspected and treated her for Kawasaki's disease although she did not have all the usual symptoms.

Article Abstract:

Case of a 40-year-old woman with hypotension after an overdose of amlodine in a suicide attempt, who had no known illness or history of psychiatric disorder, is reported.
