A 72-year-old woman with a prosthetic aortic valve and intracranial hemorrhage

Article Abstract:

A 72-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital because of weight loss, headaches, dizziness, disorientation, slurred speech and agitation. She had received an artificial heart valve five years before to replace her aortic valve. She also had a history of coronary artery disease and had received a coronary bypass. During her hospital stay, she developed cardiogenic shock and had to be placed on a ventilator. She eventually died and an autopsy revealed a blood clot on her artificial heart valve. Most patients take anticoagulants to prevent this, but her doctor had stopped her warfarin three weeks before admission.
