A community based study of vitamin A and vitamin E status of adolescent girls living in the Shire valley, Southern Malawi

Article Abstract:

The vitamin A and E status and anemia in non-pregnant teenage girls living in rural communities in the Shire Valley, Southern Malawi were investigated. A questionnaire was administered to collect socio-demographic data in addition to measuring the heights and weights of participants. Results showed that vitamin A concentrations and age had a significant relationship, with younger girls being more deficient of vitamin A. It was also found that vitamin E and anemia were common among adolescent girls in the Shire Valley.

Risk factors for xerophthalmia in the Republic of Kiribati

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the risk factors for xerophthalmia in the Republic of Kiribati. A prevalence survey was made of 666 xerophthalmic preschool children and 816 children without xerophthalmia. The results indicate a relationship between xerophthalmia and factors that may be amenable to intervention. The findings also suggest an association between consumption of provitamin A carotenoids and decreased risk of xerophthalmia among preschool children.
