A comparison of orally administered misoprostol to intravenous oxytocin for labor induction in women with favorable cervical examinations

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to compare orally administered misoprostol with intravenous oxytocin infusion for labor induction in women with favorable cervical examinations (defined as a Bishop score of 6 or more). The results concluded that oral misoprostol offers no benefit over intravenous oxytocin for labor induction in women with favorable cervical examinations and in fact, it is associated with a higher likelihood of uterine hyperstimulation and may increase the risk of uterine rupture.

FGL2 prothrombinase messenger RNA expression in gravid and nongravid human myometrium

Article Abstract:

An enzyme called FGL2 prothrombinase is present in greater than normal amounts in the uterine tissue of pregnant women, according to a study of 47 women. This enzyme produces the enzyme thrombin from its precursor, prothrombin. Thrombin is an enzyme that causes blood to clot, but it may also be involved in labor and uterine contraction.

Longitudinal evaluation of activated protein C resistance among normal pregnancies of Hispanic women

Article Abstract:

In a study of 20 Hispanic pregnant women, half developed resistance to activated protein C during their pregnancy. Resistance to activated protein C can increase the risk of abnormal blood clotting. The condition persisted throughout their pregnancy but resolved shortly after birth.
