A fulfilling career with many options

Article Abstract:

Mental health services, increasingly targeted at particular patient groups, offer therapies designed specifically to tackle different conditions, thus increasing opportunities for mental health nurses to specialize and develop advanced skills in particular areas of care. An intensive support programme coordinator who works with people having eating disorders, and is also a qualified psychotherapist, reveals she finds it satisfying being part of a multidisciplinary team bringing together individual skills to help people.

Patient restraint positions in a psychiatric inpatient service

Article Abstract:

Data from a cross-sectional survey are used to identify clinical variables in a psychiatric inpatient unit that may make physical restraint in a particular patient restraint position more likely. The study suggests that an opportunity is clearly available to influence the nature of physical intervention through quite minimal changes to training programmes and the principle of its use as a last resort in the event of loss of control has to be maintained.
