A prospective, double-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial of ampicillin-sulbactam for preterm premature rupture of membranes in women receiving antenatal corticosteroid therapy

Article Abstract:

Antibiotic therapy combined with steroid therapy may improve infant outcomes in pregnancies complicated by preterm premature rupture of membranes (PROM). Researchers treated 112 women from 23 to 35 weeks of pregnancy with preterm PROM with either three days of ampicillin-sulbactam followed by amoxicillin-clavulanate, three days of ampicillin followed by amoxicillin, or placebo. Women 32 weeks' gestation and under received corticosteroid therapy. Three infants died; all were in the placebo group. The ampicillin-sulbactam therapy was most effective at reducing infant death, infection, and maternal infection, and at increasing birth weight.

Fetal fibronectin: a new tool for the prediction of successful induction of labor

Article Abstract:

The presence of fetal fibronectin in vaginal fluids may prove a useful means of predicting successful induction of labor. Among 160 women undergoing labor induction, 15% of women with positive fibronectin tests had cesarean sections versus 27% with negative tests. Length of time from start of induction to delivery averaged 21 hours in the positive group versus 36 hours in the negative group. Fibronectin predicted success independently of the Bishop score, a physical evaluation of labor readiness. Among women with low scores, 22% with positive fibronectin tests had cesareans versus 35% with negative tests.

Fetal fibronectin detection as a predictor of preterm birth in actual clinical practice

Article Abstract:

Fetal fibronectin in cervical fluid samples in pregnant women is a fairly accurate sign of premature labor. This as the conclusion of a study of 151 pregnant women who had a fetal fibronectin test within seven days of delivery.
