A randomized controlled trial of very early prophylactic ligation of the ductus arteriosus in babies who weighed 1000g or less at birth

Article Abstract:

Infants at birth sometimes suffer from abnormally open lumen in the ductus arteriosus, the fetal blood vessel connecting the lung artery to the descending aorta. The authors examined whether surgical suturing of the ductus arteriosus would reduce the risk of death and disease in very-low- birth-weight babies with this condition. The surgical procedure did not change the rate of death, abnormal lung development, diseases of the retina, or hemmorrhages within ventricles. In conclusion, surgery to repair the ductus arteriosus soon after birth reduces the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis in low-birth-weight babies who require supplemental oxygen.

Ibuprofen and patent ductus arteriosus

Article Abstract:

Ibuprofen appears to be effective in closing a patent ductus arteriosus in premature babies and has fewer side effects than indomethacin. A patent ductus arterioosus is a natural fetal structure that normally closes at birth, but may persist in babies born prematurely. Ibuprofen inhibits the production of prostaglandins, which maintain the structure.

A comparison of ibuprofen and indomethacin for closure of patent ductus arteriosus

Article Abstract:

Ibuprofen is effective in treating a patent ductus arteriosus in premature newborn babies and has fewer side effects than indomethacin, according to a study of 148 babies. Patent ductus arteriosus is a normal fetal condition that normally disappears at birth but can persist in those who are born prematurely.
