DNA of human papillomavirus type 16 in dysplastic and malignant lesions of the conjunctiva and cornea

Article Abstract:

Human papillomaviruses have been associated with cancer, especially cancer of the anogenital tract. But the association of strains of human papillomavirus with conjunctival dysplastic lesions and cancers has remained unclear. A group of neoplastic lesions of the conjunctiva were examined for the presence of DNA sequences for human papillomavirus types 16 and 18. The dysplastic specimens examined were positive for DNA sequences. The authors conclude that a substantial percentage of conjunctival premalignant and malignant lesions contain DNA from human papillomavirus type 16.

Cancer -- nature, nurture, or both

Article Abstract:

Most cancers probably have many different causes that all interact to form the final disease. A study of about 90,000 twins showed that the most common cancers have a predominantly environmental component. In all cases, the proportion of cancer attributed to environmental causes was 65% or greater. Nevertheless, some genetic component still exists, since identical twins were more likely to both have cancer than fraternal twins. On the other hand, the risk of cancer in the twin sibling of a cancer patient is still relatively low.
