A randomized pilot trial of administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor to women before preterm delivery

Article Abstract:

Giving women in premature labor granulocyte colony-stimulating factor could improve their baby's outcome. Premature infants have immature immune systems and have a high risk of bacterial infection. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor boosts the production of immune cells. Researchers randomly gave granulocyte colony-stimulating factor or a placebo to 26 women in premature labor. Bone marrow biopsies on the newborn infants showed that those in the granulocyte colony-stimulating factor group had stronger immune systems. The chemical caused no serious adverse effects in mother or child.
