A safe place to work

Article Abstract:

New UK government legislation obliging employers to involve their staff in health and safety management will have some relevance for nurses, who encounter a range of potential dangers in the workplace. Key hazards include patient handling, violence, slipping and tripping and exposure to dangerous substances and chemicals. Nurses have many skills which can be used in assessing risks, developing more accurate audit tools and improving implementation of existing national and international health and safety legislation.

Animal magic

Article Abstract:

A Royal College of Nursing Professional Officer, who has worked with AIDS and HIV sufferers, describes the importance of the home as a place of peace and personal space away from the pressures of work. She believes the home is particularly important to nurses, as part of the process of distancing themselves from too much emotional involvement in their work. She enjoys having a home uncluttered by ornaments, and appreciates the opportunities for escape and for social contact which dog ownership offers.

An ill wind

Article Abstract:

Discovering that you are suffering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which is a rare condition, can be very alarming, according to former staff nurse Audrey McGinty, who first noticed clear symptoms of the condition in Jan 1995. She spent a considerable time in intensive care, during which she had to remain flat on her back. She was in a great deal of pain, and spent a total of six and a half months in hospital. It may take three-five years before she returns to full health.
