Freedom to care

Article Abstract:

There have been radical changes in the approach to nursing in the UK's three high-security hospitals since 1990 as a result of changes introduced by the Special Hospitals Service Authority (SHSA). Previously, the public and even nurses tended to view special hospitals as essentially a sort of prison. Now however, the approach is based more on offering therapeutic care within a secure environment. For example, the three hospitals now offer 24-hour care, instead of patients being locked in wards or rooms between 9pm and 7am, and try to avoid secluding potentially violent patients if at all possible.

Influencing the health agenda

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common in the UK for elderly people to seek to determine strategies in the provision of healthcare services. The National Pensioners' Convention, for example, campaigns on a range of issues relevant to elderly people, and seeks to overturn the view that the elderly are merely a burden on the National Health Service budget. The elderly are also keen to promote the possible health care needs of future generations. It is likely that the elderly will become increasingly vociferous about their own healthcare requirements and those of future generations.

Catheters: urinary tract infections

Article Abstract:

Patients who use a catheter are at considerable risk of developing a urinary tract infection. Bacteria are almost always associated with a long-term indwelling catheter, with the infection entering either between the outside of the catheter and the inner side of the urethral wall or through the catheter tube. Particular care should be taken when changing the catheter bag, as this is when contamination is most likely to take place.
