A snapshot in time

Article Abstract:

There has been only a muted reaction to the introduction of national vocational qualifications (NVQs) in the UK's National Health Service. Some observers feel that NVQs will create a diluted skill mix and reduce the number of jobs available for highly qualified employees. They point out that workplace assessment costs are not easy to quantify and that it is too easy to give NVQs a low priority. However, supporters of NVQs welcome the new focus on an individual's abilities, and feel that the barriers between NVQs and academic qualifications will gradually be broken down.

UKCC rapped over nurse consultant plan

Article Abstract:

The UKCC's recommendation that an advanced practitioner position known as a nurse consultant be created could simply heighten the confusion which already exists in the minds of many patients, according to UKCC council members. They point out that many clinical nurses are already highly specialised in their area, but that most of these would be excluded from the new category. Nurse academics have also criticised the idea of defining advanced nursing practice as being at master's or degree level.

Where are the students?

Article Abstract:

Student nurses are missing the opportunity to work in operating theatres during their training despite the specialized knowledge they may gain. Five tutors on a nurse training course and five theatre nurses were interviewed, all agreed that a variety of skills can be gained in theatre which are not available elsewhere. If nurses are not permitted to work in this speciality during training many will not choose this option on qualification causing a shortage of theatre nurses in the future.
