Gonorrhea in the United States, 1981-1996: demographic and geographic trends

Article Abstract:

Many Americans are still at risk for gonorrhea even though the infection is less common. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that between 1981 and 1996 the number of cases of gonorrhea dropped 71%. However, the rate of gonorrhea among blacks compared to whites was even higher in 1996 than it was in 1981. Gonorrhea rates were highest in women 15 to 19 years old and men 20 to 24 years old. The South had the highest rate of gonorrhea nationwide.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Gynecologic Symptoms and Signs in Women With a History of Induced Abortion

Article Abstract:

Women who have undergone induced abortion appear to have higher rates of genital infections. Researchers compared 996 women attending a clinic, of whom 19% reported a previous abortion. Women who had previously aborted were nearly twice as likely to have a bacterial or yeast infection of the vagina, and five times as likely to have previously had gonorrhea. Women with an abortion history may benefit from sexually transmitted disease counseling.
