ADA vs. Aetna: membership advocacy aimed at protecting the dentist-patient relationship

Article Abstract:

The American Dental Association has sued Aetna Inc., Aetna-U.S. Healthcare Inc., and Aetna Life Insurance Company for breach of contract, trade libel, and unlawful interference with the dentist-patient relationship. The case revolves around two dentists who were not part of Aetna's network of dentists but provided care to patients insured by Aetna. Aetna paid less than the usual, customary, and reasonable fee to these dentists, implying that the dentists' fees were excessive and unreasonable.
