AMA leaders renew push for Medicare overhaul plan

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association (AMA) is calling for significant overhaul of Medicare and urging the adoption of the Medicare reform plan it introduced in June 1995. The AMA plan is modeled after the federal employees' health benefits program, and would allow its 38 million disabled and elderly beneficiaries to choose between a governmental contribution to a plan of their choice or a modified Medicare program. The AMA is hoping to increase beneficiary cost-consciousness and to use saved costs to subsidize insurance coverage for those too poor to completely afford it.

GOP health plan blitz: House plan gets tentative AMA nod; spending curbs a concern

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Assn (AMA) sees proposed legislative changes by Congressional Republicans to Medicare as generally acceptable, although the AMA has some reservations regarding the legislation's details. The Medicare reforms, proposed in mid-September 1995, are designed to save $270 billion in the period covering 1996 to 2002. The AMA is concerned that the legislation lacks budget failsafes and other measures to ensure sufficient health care coverage for the elderly.

AMA, White House talk reform

Article Abstract:

The Task Force on National Health Reform headed by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton is preparing for a public hearing on its national healthcare plan in early May 1993. The task force has been questioned by the American Medical Assn (AMA) because task force meetings were held in private without AMA participation. AMA executives have been invited to speak at future task force meetings. More than 500 people are involved in either the task force or one of its work groups.
