The key to innovation

Article Abstract:

Senior managers are wasting a resource by not involving sisters in policy-making. Surveys of sisters' attitudes reveal frustration from being excluded. Job satisfaction is affected by lack of support for innovations in nursing practice. Lack of involvement has led to low morale. Senior managers should recognise the contribution sisters can make. They should involve sisters in policy-making and staff issues. Sisters should also be aware of their managerial role.

Polio's still lethal punch

Article Abstract:

In early 1992 staff of Southampton General Hospital, England nursed a polyomyelitis patient. The patient contracted the disease through faecal contamination from a baby's nappy. Polio is rare in Britain due to a successful vaccination programme. However, non-immunised people are at risk from vaccine-related strains that are active in a recently vaccinated person. Public education is essential to maintain the success of the vaccination programme.
