Acute myeloid leukaemia and retinoids

Article Abstract:

The treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a group of malignancies of theprecursor cells of various types of leukocytes, with retinoids is reviewed. Thepossible use of all-trans-retinoic acid and 13-cis-retinoic acid in AML was revealed when physiologic concentrations of the vitamin A forms induced terminal diferentiation of an in vitro myeloblastic cell line, HL-60, into morphologically and functionally normal blood granulocytes. Furthermore, proliferation of these luekemic cells was halted with the use of retinoic acid.

Food consumption patterns in relation to wealth status and age groups in a Palestinian West Bank village population were examined, and it was found that the proportion of dietary energy from fat and animal products was highest amongst wealthier households. It is concluded the shortage of dietary energy was not a problem, although food consumption patterns differed between the poor and wealthy.
