Ankylosing spondylitis

Article Abstract:

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic form of arthritis that affects the spinal column and results in fusing of vertebrae which is caused due to swelling of spinal ligaments and tendons. Symptoms vary from patient to patient but generally there is pain in hips, lower back and sometimes at the back of thighs. Diagnosis is based on the area, type and progression of pain and treatment includes medication in the form of non-steroidal drugs and sometimes hip replacement surgery is required.

Xanthoma

Article Abstract:

Xanthoma is a commonly occurring skin disorder consisting of fatty deposits under the surface of the skin, with tiny lesions or up to 6-8 cm in diameter, and older people and those with elevated cholesterol, are especially at risk. Often the cause is metabolic disorders, and the treatment for persistent xanthoma includes topical creams, laser vaporisation, surgical removal or by electrodessication.

The benefits of increasing levels of physical activity

Article Abstract:

The physical activity guidance issued by the NICE is outlined and some the benefits from the increased activity are discussed highlighting the implications for practice. There is a clear evidence of the role of physical activity in maintaining good health but this needs to be supported by more evidence on effective interventions for promotion.
