Antiretroviral therapy for pregnant women

Article Abstract:

Approval of new antiretroviral drugs for treatment of HIV may make their use available to pregnant women. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of new drugs usually warns against using them in pregnant women until more is known about the drugs. Single drug therapy with zidovudine may no longer be adequate for preventing transmission of HIV from a pregnant mother to her infant. Doctors should honor the mother's decisions concerning her care by caring for her first and the fetus second. Registries of harmful effects of new drugs should be distributed and publicized.
