An offer pregnant women should not refuse

Article Abstract:

Every pregnant woman in London, England, should have the opportunity to be tested for the HIV virus, according to the recommendations of a working party backed by the royal nursing colleges. The Department of Health has had a policy promoting HIV tests for all pregnant women for some years, but health trusts have largely ignored the policy. The Royal College of Midwives will publish a leaflet on the policy, particularly stressing cultural awareness as 84% of UK children with AIDS are black. Two-thirds of the 300 children born annually with HIV in the UK are in London.

Why nurses are more at risk than these bouncers

Article Abstract:

Nurses are the employees most vulnerable to workplace violence, according to a report by the UK Trades Union Congress (TUC). A poll by nursing organisations revealed that two-thirds of nurses had suffered either physical or verbal abuse during a 12-month period, which compares to a quarter of security staff reporting attacks. Young female nurses are particularly vulnerable, with 11% of female nurses in the 25-34 age group reporting physical attacks. The TUC criticises the relaxed attitude of many health trusts concerning workplace violence.
