Are SSRIs safe for children

Article Abstract:

Clinical testing points out that the results are not convincing to suggest that all selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, including paroxetine (Paxil), are equally effective for depression in children and adults. Data indicate that these drugs are likely to prevent suicide than to cause it. However, both FDA and UK's Committee on Safety of Medicines do not recommend paroxetine for adolescents or children.

Which SSRI?

Article Abstract:

Five different (SSRIs) are presented for the treatment of depression and a sixth (fluvoxamine) for use in obsessive compulsive disorder. The choice among the SSRIs comes down to adverse effects, drug interactions and costs since all SSRIs in adequate doses are about equally efficacious.

Is Effexor more effective for depression than an SSRI?

Article Abstract:

For some patients with depression venlafaxine (Effexor) is considered to be more effective than SSRI, but published studies are considered to be unconvincing. However some patients who fail to respond to one SSRI may respond to venlafaxine or to another SSRI.
