Nursing students studying at colleges of higher education find themselves faced with many practical problems that do not affect their colleagues. Most nursing students, with their different term times, are unable to find accommodation in halls of residence, which tend to favour ordinary students, while access to college libraries during vacation times may be restricted. It appears that nursing students are treated as second-class citizens.

Fear busters: students are helped to overcome fears of the unknown with a special course that prepares them for placements in mental health specialties

Article Abstract:

Common foundation programme (CFP) students must undertake mental health nursing experience. This involves classwork, and practical experience in a learning disability placement and a metnal health clinical specialty. The preparatory week is aimed at helping students to overcome some fears associated with the placements. Following the clinical placements students return to the education centre to reflect on practice.
