Autoantibodies against folate receptors in women with a pregnancy complicated by a neural-tube defect

Article Abstract:

Some women who have a baby that has a neural tube defect may be producing antibodies against the cell receptor for folic acid. A study of 12 women who had a baby with a neural tube defect found that nine of the women produced these antibodies. Only two of 20 women who never had a baby with a neural tube defect produced these antibodies. Neural tube defects include spina bifida, meningomyelocele, and encephalocele.

Autoantibodies to folate receptors in the cerebral folate deficiency syndrome

Article Abstract:

The low 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5MTHF) level in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with cerebral folate deficiency is a consequence of impaired transport across the blood-brain and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barriers. Cerebral folate deficiency is caused by circulating autoaniboides that block the binding of folate to the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored folate receptors.

Pernicious anemia with neuropsychiatric dysfunction in a patient with sickle cell anemia treated with folate supplementation

Article Abstract:

A patient with sickle cell disease in whom neurologic deterioration due to untreated cobalamin deficiency that developed during treatment with folate is described. It is suggested that routine folate supplementation in patients with sickle cell disease should be approached with caution.
