Recombinant human leptin in women with hypothalamic amenorrhea

Article Abstract:

In this prospective, interventional study of 8 women with hypothalamic amenorrhea, leptin administration led to normalization of levels of reproductive hormones, follicular development, and menstrual cyclicity. Leptin administration for the relative leptin deficiency in women with hypothalamic amenorrhea appears to improve reproductive, thyroid, and growth hormone axes and markers of bone formation.

Hypothalamic amenorrhea may be preceded by a history of irregular menses and may last several months to years. The study by welt et al., suggests that leptin is important in mediating the neuroendocrine abnormalities of hypothalamic amenorrhea.
