Progressive prothrombotic state in women with advancing HIV disease

Article Abstract:

The association of advancing stages of HIV with coagulation abnormalities that could predispose to venous thrombotic events (VTEs) is determined by studying a group of HIV-infected women and HIV-negative comparators. The results have shown that advancing HIV is associated with progressive abnormalities of protein S and factor VIII, both of which are associated with increased risk for VTE, thus providing a biologic mechanism for the increased prevalence of VTE in HIV.

HIV-1 RNA in plasma and genital tract secretions in women infected with HIV-1

Article Abstract:

The presence of HIV-1 RNA in cervical fluid can be used to evaluate an HIV-infected woman's response to treatment. In a study of 56 such women, over half had HIV-1 RNA in their cervical fluid. Women with low CD4 counts and high blood viral levels were most likely to have HIV-1 RNA in cervical fluid.
