Baby milks and the EC

Article Abstract:

A new European Community (EC) directive on baby milk formulas has been adopted. It is starting to influence professionals involved in health care, but they may not all know the implications of the directive. There has been no UK legislation on baby formulas, with marketing being regulated by the code of practice of the Food and Drink Federation, based on the code of the World Health Organisation, and guidelines for composition laid down by the DHSS, all of them voluntary. Under the EC directive, whose regulations are mandatory, nutritional criteria for infant formula and follow-on formula are set down. There are also marketing restrictions. Implications of the legislation are discussed at length.
