Back pain in the workplace

Article Abstract:

The back injury construct holds that physical demands that render the pain less tolerable are the proximate cause of the back pain and hence the agent of injury which a damaging misconception for the medical and workers' compensation systems. Regional backache is a common predicament inside or outside the workplace and hence could not be shown to be more specific to the workplace than the viruses that cause upper respiratory tract infection.

A Prospective Study of Back Belts for Prevention of Back Pain and Injury

Article Abstract:

Back belts did not reduce the rate of back pain or the number of workers' compensation claims for back injury in a study of 13,873 employees in 160 retail merchandise stores in 30 states. Industrial back belts are designed to minimize back injuries during heavy lifting.

Back Belts in the Workplace

Article Abstract:

It may be necessary to redesign job environments rather than giving employees who life heavy objects back belts. A study published in 2000 found that the use of industrial back belts did not reduce the rate of back injury or the number of workers' compensation claims.
