Barriers to protection

Article Abstract:

A report from the Health Visitors' Association concludes that health visitors are reluctant to engage in child protection procedures because they are seen to damage families and fail to help the children. The current system classifies parents as failures without providing support and help and the culture needs to move towards a system of support and preventative action. The association has called for more services aimed at promoting child and family welfare, particularly in areas such as family planning, school nursing, community nursing and health visiting.

On the brink

Article Abstract:

Accident and emergency nurses at London hospitals believe that the condition of many patients on arrival at hospital is worse than it should be because they have had to wait a long time for an ambulance. The London Ambulance Service (LAS) is widely acknowledged to be in crisis, and the government is now set to take steps to force it to reorganise. Unison, the health workers' union, blames the problems on the government's unwilingness to fund the service, while the government blames poor relations between LAS workers and management.

Choice in childbirth

Article Abstract:

A multi-disciplinary conference has advocated greater choice in maternity care. A consensus statement emphasised flexibility and safety. Professionals should empower mothers to make informed decisions. Training was therefore essential to meet this responsibility. The panel recommended a review of current services. Eliminating wasteful practices in antenatal care could cover increased cost.
