Blood pressure management: individualized treatment based on absolute risk and the potential for benefit

Article Abstract:

Physicians should prescribe treatment with anti-hypertensive drugs based on a patient's individual characteristics rather than on a specific blood pressure measurement. Anti-hypertensive drugs are different medications used to treat hypertension, or persistent high blood pressure. The development of hypertension is associated with an increased risk of different types of cardiovascular disease such as a heart attack, stroke or kidney disease. It is only one of several risk factors associated with the development of cardiovascular disease, and treatment for hypertensive is not a cure. Many individuals with normal blood pressure have had a heart attack or stroke. Some individuals with elevated blood pressure may not have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Treatment with anti-hypertensive drugs may not be necessary for these individuals.
