Article Abstract:

Appropriate nursing care plays a vital role in the survival of patients who have had surgery following intestinal failure. Almost all patients require intravenous access for fluid and electrolyte restoration. Most patients need between 9 g and 11 g of nitrogen and between 1,800 and 2,400 calories, even accounting for the increased demands of sepsis and other causes of catabolism. It is important to avoid overfeeding, as this can cause problems such as jaundice. Nurses should take great care to ensure that patients use more nitrogen than they lose.
