Breakfast glycaemic response in patients with type 2 diabetes: effects of bedtime dietary carbohydrates

Article Abstract:

Slowly digestible carbohydrates have a second-meal effect, according to research into the overnight second-meal effect of a bedtime supplement of 'rapid' and 'slow' starch in type 2 diabetic patients. It was established that a bedtime meal providing carbohydrates from uncooked cornstarch has a positive impact on breakfast glucose tolerance the following morning. This was not the case with a bedtime meal made up of white bread. This highlights the importance of a slow release profile of the carbohydrates in prompting an overnight second-meal effect in type 2 diabetic patients.

Undigested carbohydrates and intestinal micro-ecology

Article Abstract:

It was presented that the undigested carbohydrates influence the metabolic activity of the intestinal microflora. Micro-ecological systems are formed on the basis of biochemical conditions such as lactose breakdown in the intestines which occur secondary to different borderline concentrations of some food components in the mother or cow's milk. It was postulated that the micro-ecological conditions of the large intestines is altered by resistant starch by its production of an acidophilic environment.
