Bridging the gulf

Article Abstract:

Patient-centered care emphasizes improved communication between physicians and patients. For example, physicians learn to listen carefully to patients and involve them in decision-making about their health. In addition, patient satisfaction is considered an important factor in evaluating physician performance. The Picker Institute has developed surveys to evaluate patients' responses in a variety of medical settings, and the results of these surveys can help physicians gauge their strengths and weaknesses in dealing with their patients.
