Thinking about a career change? Take it step by step

Article Abstract:

Physicians who are thinking about changing their careers should assess their business skills, interests and desires when choosing what type of new career to enter. Physicians often have developed several business management skills such as scheduling, making decisions and solving problems. These skills can be applied in a variety of industries. Possible career opportunities include being an entrepreneur, a medical consultant, hospital administrator or writing. Vocational counselors or career testing can also help physicians determine their interests and abilities.

AMA cos-sponsoring computer courses

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Assn (AMA) and the Informatics Institute are sponsoring computer-related courses for doctors and group practices. Computers and the Internet will play an increasing role in communicating with patients, says Marshall Ruffin, a doctor and the institute's president. Physicians also can use computer technology to supply information about themselves, instead of leaving the task solely to health insurers and other groups, Ruffin says. The computer courses cost $399 for AMA members.
