Article Abstract:

The Nursing Times Open Learning programme helps nurses in all fields with continuing education. Under the requirements of Post-Registration Education and Practice (PREP) nurses have to re-register once every three years. These requirements have a link with Credit Accumulation and Transfer System (CATS) awards in higher education. CATS offer an opportunity for nurses to direct their careers by determining what education they receive.

Issues concerning the creation of support programmes for new nurses in UK hospitals are discussed. The supervised postdiploma development year scheme at the Royal Free Hospital in Middlesex, England, includes supportive study days for newly qualified nurses and encourages work-based learning.

Factors which determine the way individuals make decisions about health are examined, together with the means by which health promoters can influence these decisions. Study focuses on individuals' attitudes to the health promoters as well as to their own health.
