C-peptide, insulin-like growth factors I and II, and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 in cord serum of twins: genetic versus environmental regulation

Article Abstract:

Maternal factors may determine insulin secretion in twin pregnancies, while insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) production may be genetically determined. Researchers evaluated umbilical cord blood from 110 twin pregnancies and from 178 pairs of nonsibling singleton pregnancies. Insulin levels in the fetus were determined by maternal factors while the fetus's genetic makeup determined the level of IGF-1. Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) levels were determined by maternal and genetic factors. Fetuses with high levels of IGFBP-1 had severe growth restriction and placental abnormalities. Insulin facilitates growth and weight gain.

Article Abstract:

Diabetes during pregnancy may be associated with excessive oxygen production, which may affect both mother and baby. In a study of diabetic rats, blood levels of 8-isoprostaglandin F (sub2alpha) were higher than normal. This prostaglandin is a marker of lipid oxidation.

Under-nourishment during pregnancy may adversely affect blood vessel dilation in the fetus, according to a study in sheep. This may lead to hypertension later in life.
