California slashes funds for immigrant prenatal care

Article Abstract:

State funding under Medi-Cal for prenatal care for immigrants is scheduled to be phased out by Dec 1, 1997, under the new California welfare reform law, but will continue until court cases related to the program's planned elimination are settled. The Los Angeles County Medical Assn and other organizations have voiced opposition to discontinuing the $70 million program, stating that to do so will lead to more infant deaths and to millions of dollars in expenses as more babies are born with diseases.
