Cardiac revascularization in specialty and general hospitals

Article Abstract:

A retrospective study of 42,737 Medicare beneficiaries who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and 26,274 who underwent coronary-artery bypass grafting (CABG) during 2000 and 2001 in specialty cardiac hospitals and general hospitals in the same markets is conducted. The lower unadjusted mortality rate after their healthier patients and higher procedural volumes account for cardiac revascularization in specialty cardiac hospitals.

Certificate of need regulations and use of coronary revascularization after acute myocardial infarction

Article Abstract:

Certificate of need regulations emerged in the 1970s as a mechanism to control health care expenditures and the diffusion of costly technologies, and are administered by states and require hospitals to obtain approval prior to establishing certain clinical services, such as coronary revascularization. Certificates of need are effective in limiting the expansion of some services and promote the development of clinical centers of excellence.
