Cardiac risk stratification and risk reduction strategies: beta-Blockers reduce perioperative cardiac morbidity and mortality

Article Abstract:

MEDLINE was searched for reports published since 1980 for the relevant articles and guidelines to identify randomized clinical trials of beta-blockers and preoperative myocardial ischemia or infarction and mortality. The findings reveal that beta-Blockers significantly reduced the incidence of ischemia in 3 studies and cardiac death in 2 studies.

Statin therapy reduces perioperative mortality in patients undergoing vascular surgery in a case-control study

Article Abstract:

A case control design to estimate the effect of current statin use of perioperative cardiac complications in patients undergoing major noncardiac vascular surgery is discussed. The findings indicate that statin therapy may reduce mortality in the perioperative period, but the limitations of the study design prevent firm conclusions.

Managing preoperative cardiac risk: balancing noninvasive testing and empirical Beta Blocker Therapy

Article Abstract:

The relationship between clinical factors, dobutamine stress echocardiography, and cardiac outcome in a cohort of patients undergoing major vascular surgery was examined. Patients receiving Beta-blockers had a significantly lower risk for myocardial infarction or cardiac deaths.
