Safety issues involving medical devices: Implications of recent implantable cardioverter-difibrillator malfunctions

Article Abstract:

Device safety issues would undoubtedly become more prevalent as physicians and patients increasingly rely on technological advances to treat medical conditions and prolong life. It is discussed that is would be critical to ensure that continued advances in medical advances will enhance or maintain device reliability with expanding patient populations, more device implants, and increasing device complexity.

Medical device regulation: an introduction for the practicing physician

Article Abstract:

Physicians can help to participate in the design of clinical use devices, production, use, by providing practical input and feedback into product design and by reporting device-related adverse events. The rules governing approved and unapproved use of medical devices, device premarket evaluation and processes of approval, should be understood by physicians.

Health plan members' views about disclosure of medical errors

Article Abstract:

An attempt is made to examine how the type of error, severity of adverse clinical outcome, and level of disclosure affect patients' responses to error and disclosure. Further, patients' attitudes, beliefs, and preferences about medical errors and disclosure in general is determined.
