Caught in the middle

Article Abstract:

Many clinical providers feel caught between serving the best interests of the patient and conforming to the cost-conscious policies of the managed care organization. These conflicts should be anticipated in order to find equitable solutions. Physician's assistants should share their experiences with each other about the ways they have resolved these conflicts. This could go a long way toward establishing a body of knowledge which could be drawn upon in such situations.

The ethical dilemmas of the Oregon health plan

Article Abstract:

The Oregon health plan represents a step in the right direction in acknowledging limitations in society's resources for medical care. The Oregon plan also rightly focuses on enriching life rather than conquering mortality. The plan makes it possible to provide care to everyone below the poverty level, but gives higher priority to types of care that are most effective in improving the patient's quality of life. Ethical concerns related to the plan are discussed.
