Citizens' advice

Article Abstract:

Sunderland Health Authority in the UK used a grant from the King's Fund to set up a citizen's jury to consider remedies for the shortage of family doctors in the area. Fourteen people, selected at random, sat for six days hearing from experts, including doctors, pharmacists and nurse practitioners. The jury has a consultative role but the health authority must consider the verdict. The jury's recommendations, which included extending the role of the nurse practitioner under the guidance of a GP, were not novel, but the Health Authority Chief Executive considered the exercise worthwhile.
