Community care gets competitive

Article Abstract:

Declining government funding and increasing market competition are forcing community health centers to fight to retain patients. Sixteenth Street Community Health Center in Milwaukee, WI, mobilized employers to intercede on the clinic's behalf when it was cut out of new agreements signed by health maintenance organizations (HMO) and large companies. The health center's ability to display its committment to and understanding of the community were essential to winning contracts with HMOs.

Pay for senior managers of practices on the upswing

Article Abstract:

Medical practice managers' salaries have risen to a median of $46,000, an increase of 26% since 1985, according to a Medical Group Management Association survey. This is comparable to the 23% increase in managerial compensation in other industries reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In group practices the increase tends to be more dramatic because more qualifications are now expected.
