Safety of withholding heparin in pregnant women with a history of venous thromboembolism

Article Abstract:

Most women with a history of venous thromboembolism will not have a recurrence during pregnancy and consequently will not need heparin, according to a study of 125 women. Venous thromboembolism occurs when a blood clot forms in a blood vessel and travels to another part of the body.

Comparison of low-intensity warfarin therapy with conventional-intensity warfarin therapy for long-term prevention of recurrent venous thromboembolism

Article Abstract:

A conventional dose of the anticoagulant drug warfarin is more effective than a low dose for preventing venous thromboembolism in patients who have already had these conditions, according to a study of 738 patients. Some doctors propose using a low dose to lower the risk of bleeding but this study showed that a low dose causes just as many bleeds as the conventional dose. Venous thromboembolism occurs when a blood clot forms in a large vein and then travels to another part of the body.

Sensitivity and Specificity of a Rapid Whole-Blood Assay for D-Dimer in the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Embolism

Article Abstract:

Measuring blood levels of D-dimer can help diagnose pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot forms in the legs and travels to the lungs. D-dimer is produced by the body during the blood clotting process so increased blood levels indicate increased blood clotting. In a study of 1,177 patients with suspected pulmonary embolism, 197 were eventually diagnosed with pulmonary embolism with ultrasound and ventilation-perfusion scans. Based on their D-dimer levels before these tests were done, D-dimer levels accurately identified 85% of the patients who had pulmonary embolism.
