End-tidal carbon monoxide measurements in women with pregnancy-induced hypertension and preeclampsia

Article Abstract:

Pregnant women with hypertension during pregnancy and preeclampsia appear to produce less carbon monoxide than other pregnant women. This could explain why pregnant women who smoke are less likely to develop preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy.

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia

Article Abstract:

All newborn babies should be tested for hyperbilirubinemia within a few days of delivery. This condition occurs when too much bilirubin is present in the body, and often occurs in newborn babies. Phototherapy and metalloporphyrins are effective treatments that could even be given at home.

Biochemical corroboration of endothelial involvement in severe preeclampsia

Article Abstract:

Dysfunctional activity of the cells lining the blood vessels seems almost certainly to be one cause of the symptoms of preeclampsia. Maternal venous blood was drawn from 28 pregnant women with severe preeclampsia, analyzed, and results were compared with blood samples from 28 pregnant women with normal blood pressure. Blood serum markers were elevated for three biochemical markers secreted by endothelial cells. A fourth marker has been identified in other studies. While each of the four markers can be produced by cells other than endothelial cells, the fact that all four appear together in preeclamptic pregnancies strongly suggests endothelial cells as their origin.
