Confined space death - 150,000 pounds sterling fine

Article Abstract:

Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, UK, has paid a fine of 150,000 pounds sterling for its part in the deaths of two of its employees. The two men were working in a confined space at a sewage pumping station. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) warns employers to ensure that they have developed a safe system of work for employees working in confined spaces. The HSE says that such work should be avoided wherever possible due to the danger of suffocation or presence of explosive or toxic gases but, where it is necessary, there should be appropriate training and safety precautions.

RSI claims warning

Article Abstract:

A rise in compensation claims for repetitive strain injury (RSI) is expected by Hammond Suddards, experts in the law, after damages were awarded to people who had been employed by British Telecom. Currently damages are low, but they could increase, and journalists are a group which could be affected. Employers need to think about improved supervision and training to avoid such claims, and to contact experts, such as neurologists, and health and safety professionals.
