Oil on troubled waters

Article Abstract:

A community health project was established in 1994 to offer health care to residents of four deprived housing estates in London, UK. Residents were asked what their health care needs were, and the most common problems were with mental health, back problems and skin conditions such as eczema. Many of the residents felt that their doctors did not give them enough time or attention and they were keen to have alternative therapies such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage and shiatsu. The project is now available to up to 180,000 residents, and funding will continue until 1998.

Developing local projects in primary health care in Wales

Article Abstract:

An official review of community nursing in Wales recommends that health services to patients can be improved through the development of primary health-care teams and improving the links between social- and health-care organisations. A grant of more than 1 million pounds sterling from the Welsh Office has supported local projects and has resulted in improved services offered by GP practices and better use of skills by primary care professionals. There has been a substantial improvement in community nursing in Wales as a result of such local initiatives.
