Article Abstract:

New laws on the management of health and safety to come into effect on Jan 1 1993 show the duty of care company directors owe employees. Breach of these rules could result in disqualification from office for a number of years under section 2 of the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986. During 1993 over 50 new safety management laws will come into effect which will regulate all business decisions. New rules will require management to: undertake risk assessment; implement decisions effectively; monitor implmentation results and ensure corrective action is taken if needed.

New Labour's Better Regulation Unit has developed the 'Concordat on Good Enforcement', which the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been the first national enforcement authority to sign. The concordat details the principles of enforcement and outlines the procedures and policy adopted by the individual enforcement authority.
